Cognac is a variety of Brandy made in the Cognac region of France. Like Champagne, its name is protected, reserved only for products of such provenance.
Usually served neat in a special glass called a snifter that exposes the surface to atmospheric air, brandy is known for a distinct nutty, buttery flavour, depending on how it’s aged and processed. Armagnac is a type of brandy made in the Armagnac region in Gascony, in the southwest of France, and adheres to the same exclusive naming rights as Cognac.

V.S. stands for “Very Special” and means the youngest brandy of the blend has been aged for at least two years.
V.S.O.P. stands for “Very Superior Old Pale” and means the newest type of brandy in the mix has been aged for at least four years.
XO stands for “Extra Old” and means the youngest brandy in the combination of brandies has been aged for at least six years.
