American Whiskey is a drinks genre unto itself, with each region putting their stamp on this well-loved spirit. As more distilleries are joining the market and making their creations readily available, it heralds a great time to get into American Whiskey drinking.
While each state’s spirit differs slightly from the last, American Whiskey can be broadly categorized as Rye, Tennessee or Bourbon. Most American Whiskies tends to be sweeter, smoother and with more tones of vanilla and spice than its Scottish or Irish counterparts. A tendency to lean towards using charred oak barrels for the final maturation stage means that this type of Whiskey tends to have a particular characteristic ‘toasted’ flavour to it as well.
With the sheer scale of the USA, there are so many distilleries popping up and making their mark on the Whiskey world. Lumping them all together would be a great disservice. The only thing for it is to dive in and get tasting!
