Whisky came to Japan in the late 1800s and was later established by who is now considered the two founding fathers of brewing- Shinjiro Torii who created Suntory and Masataka Taketsuru who formed Yoichi.
These rival houses, though trying to emulate Scotch Whisky, have paved the way for the array of Japanese Whisky we have today. In just under a century, the Japanese Whisky industry has boomed and has gained its unique character and following over the years.
Brewed in the traditional Scottish way, Japanese Whisky shares a spelling with its UK counterparts. Although half a world away from each other, the distilling process has remained similar, though resulting in different flavour profiles entirely. With each tweak of the production process, comes new characteristics. Generally, Japanese Whisky tends to be much lighter and more floral tasting. Although, some have been known to impart the traditional Scottish peaty flavour as a nod to its origins.
